|
Die Riesenmuräne (Gymnothorax javanicus) gehört zur Familie der Muränen und zur Ordnung der Aalartigen. Das sicherste Unterscheidungsmerkmal zu den anderen Familien der Aalartigen ist die fehlende Brustflosse. Dafür besitzen sie einen umlaufenden, langen Flossensaum, der aus einer Verschmelzung von Rücken-, Schwanz- und Afterflosse entstanden ist.
Die bis zu 3 m lange Riesenmuräne ist eine der größten Muränenarten. Sie ist nachtaktiv und hält sich tagsüber in Spalten und Höhlen des Riffs auf. Wie alle Muränen trifft man sie meist mit einem sich ständig öffnenden und schließenden Maul an, was für viele Taucher bedrohlich wirkt. Die vermeintliche Drohgebärde ist aber dem Umstand geschuldet, dass Muränen über keinen Kiemendeckel verfügen, mit denen Frischwasser durch die Kiemen gepumpt wird. Vielmehr erzeugen Muränen ihren Atemwasserstrom durch ein ständiges Öffnen und Schließen ihres Mauls. Wenn Muränen drohen, dann verharren sie mit weit geöffnetem Maul, bis die Gefahr vorüber ist. Riesenmuränen lassen Taucher in der Regel nahe herankommen, werden jedoch aggressiv, wenn sie provoziert werden. An Taucher gewöhnte, insbesondere angefütterte Tiere, können unangenehm aufdringlich werden.
